We Like “Free” as a data price point :-) – thanks Vodafone

So on May 1st Vodafone did something very very interesting. They introduced their new 50p per day PAYG price plan with a one-off (we really hope they repeat it) day of FREE web browsing to all their customers who did not have a data price package.

And boy did we see the effect: customer acquisitions from Vodafone UK went up THIRTEEN times that day. And has remained higher for several days. Most intriguingly, the % of female sign-ups was way higher than normal.

Significance? We had thought that maybe growth of UK mobile internet usage was held back by user acceptance/lack of familiarity. This may still be true but it is clear that if the right price points get out there (and we do know free is too much to expect) the potential for this market is amazing.
